This year they even had a shuttle service set up. It’s also very easy to get in and out of. Some of the areas are banked and under trees so it’s a wonderful place to view your favorite bands. Plenty of places to relax and have quiet time and the sight lines are terrific, especially if you have the VIP package, which always sells out. Discovery Park is surrounded by trees and a river, so it’s a comfortable place to have a festival. Sacramento is a 45 minute flight from my home in Southern California.
Of all the DWP festivals that they produce around the US every year, I have to say that Aftershock is my favorite for a variety of reasons. I decided that attending without the rush of running from stage to stage to photograph each band's first three songs (standard rules for photographing bands) might be beneficial to not only enjoying the bands sets longer, but also getting some time with the many vendors that were working the event. I would miss the camaraderie with my fellow photo journalists, as well as my interaction with the bands, publicists, and most of the insiders that normally attend this great event. Like many, the restrictions of this year’s festival did not deter me from attending. Unfortunately, because of the severity of this pandemic, these are the type of challenges and changes that we all have to face.
It’s always a joy to see the look on a fan’s face when they meet their idols for the first time, and DWP has always done a fabulous job at making the walls between rock star and fan disappear. There were none of the usual “Meet and Greets” and autograph signings at sponsored booths this year, which to me was the saddest part. Access to backstage and especially to artists, was extremely limited. In fact I applaud DWP for taking great care in the safety of the attendees in general, as this festival attracts up to 40,000 people per day.Īttendees were asked for proof of vaccination or a recent negative test before admittance, and there were testing booths outside the main gates, as has become standard. This was a decision made by the organizers, Danny Wimmer Presents to keep us all safe as there are normally a huge group of us jammed into the photo pits at the beginning of each band's set. In fact, outside of maybe a couple of hand selected photographers, NO ONE was issued a pass. Due to Covid restrictions, unfortunately I was not eligible for a photo pass this year, so I will not have my usual photo gallery as part of this report. Now a 4 day extravaganza, I once again made my way to check out as much as I possibly could.
